Innovation, collaboration, and diversity are three key factors in delivering valued software in the 21st century. Today's products, services, and entertainment systems (streaming, gaming) rely on high quality software, and each of the three factors play an important role. Innovation delivers value to developers and users - whether the innovation is open or proprietary, sustaining or disruptive. Collaboration brings ideas and people together. Diversity in approach, practice, design, and discipline improves resilience and mitigates risks. A recipe for innovation success includes strategies for collaboration and embracing diversity. This talk will conclude with a summary of experiences and examples spanning multiple software application domains.
Based in Silicon Valley, Steven Fraser advises on technology transfer, company-academic open innovation R&D partnerships, and agile software development practices (innoxec.com). Prior to Innoxec, Steve led HP's Global University Programs and served as the Director of the Cisco Research Center. At Cisco he orchestrated more than $10M in annual university research investments, led PhD recruiting, and managed academic-company relationships on six continents. At Qualcomm, Steve led technical training and education programs in software engineering and wireless technologies. As a Senior Manager (Global External Research) and Sector Lead for $2M investments, Steve incubated and brokered university research partnerships. At Carnegie Melon University's Software Engineering Institute (SEI), as a Visiting Scientist, Steve prototyped and piloted team-based domain engineering techniques to leverage commonality in software product families. Steve received his Ph.D. in Electrical (Software) Engineering from McGill University (Montréal), a M.Sc. in Engineering Physics (Queen's at Kingston), and a B.Sc. in Physics and Computer Science (McGill). Steve serves in a variety of conference leadership roles for the ACM, Agile Alliance, and IEEE. He has published more than 75 technical reports and is a Senior Member of both the ACM and the IEEE.
